Earlier this year, the Shields Street Heart project was completed by the Cairns Regional Council. This city revitalization project centred around creating a new urban park in the Cairns CBD – a kind of “pedestrian oasis” on Shields Street linking Grafton and Abbott Streets.
Gone was the asphalt, replaced with a more welcoming scene of shady trees, turfed mounds, mosaic-tiled retaining walls and natural stone paving. Public artworks were added in abundance, highlighting the culture and creativity of local and regional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists. Contemporary lighting was added to provide much needed colour and atmosphere after dark. In addition to this, feature lighting on trees and garden beds, as well moving projected artworks were installed, bringing the area to life at night.
Recently I worked with the Council to provide the urban and landscape architecture photography of the project to showcase the completed zones. Here are a couple of images from the shoot.
