Interpretive shelter and lookout along the redeveloped Cardwell Foreshore
When Cyclone Yasi unleashed on the coastal town of Cardwell in February 2011, trees were ripped up, houses were destroyed and the town’s foreshore – a popular stop for travellers between Cairns and Townsville – was swallowed up by the accompanying storm surge. It was very much a small community smashed up beyond recognition. Three years on and the town has been transformed with the redevelopment of the Cardwell Foreshore. Infrastructure to withstand another cyclone has been put in place, as well as new playgrounds, barbeques, pathways, amphitheatres and other aspects for locals and visitors to enjoy.
The clients commissioned me to capture all the elements of the revitalised foreshore and its use. Being around 5 kilometres long, there was certainly plenty to photograph, with the redeveloped foreshore incorporating various areas of interest including the Jetty Plaza, Wetland Walk, Heritage Precinct and Coral Sea Memorial. By incorporating elements of local art, culture and history, the designers and townspeople have created something destined to be an enduring centrepiece for the community and region.
